“Don’t let the world change your kind heart, let your kind heart change the world.” Debasish Mridha, MD
Since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, we in the UK have been so aware that we are so lucky to have an amazing National Health Service (NHS). The dedication and care being shown is truly outstanding and remarkable.
My personal experience of the NHS has been limited to donating blood, but luckily not having to call on their professional services. That is, until this week when I found myself in Leicester Royal Infirmary for a stomach investigation.
I must admit that I felt really nervous as I went through the process of admission. After a time of fasting, I was taken to a unit where a camera was put into my stomach to see what problem I had, which turned out to be an ulcer that was bleeding. The surgeon remotely repaired my stomach wall – truly amazing, skilled, professional work.
What I have discovered in the hospital is that there is a super value at work – a value composed of lots of others. The super value I can see so clearly in action is kind-heartedness.
Kind-hearted people are kind but they go one step deeper and show sympathy, empathy and compassion, coupled with generosity and a sense of humour. They treat everyone equally, showing patience, positivity, helpfulness and care.
In the hospital, I have observed members of the hospital team being unreasonably challenged by patients who are disorientated. I have been so impressed with their ability to maintain their incredible professionalism and humanity.
This combination of professionalism and humanity, which is shown as kind-heartedness, can be seen in all the overworked staff who are being stretched to the limit coping with such a complex range of issues in the context of the pandemic.
I will go home having received exceptional care from all medical and care staff. `I cannot praise you adequately for what you are doing. THANK YOU.
Imagine what a world we would live in if all people were able to be kind-hearted? It begins with the desire to observe the quality of our daily thoughts and actions so that we ensure that our relationships are led by kind-heartedness.
