The benefits of Values-based Education (VbE)
Values-based Education (VbE) is an umbrella term for a research-based influential, transformational educational philosophy and its practices, initially developed by Dr Neil Hawkes and now part of a global movement.
VbE gives pupils an academic, social and personal moral compass to nourish themselves so that they develop positive life-enhancing character traits. The outcomes of VbE include: quality schools, positive ethos and school culture; happy, motivated staff and pupils, a high level of wellbeing and resilience, which all contribute to a new story of human sustainability and prosperity.
Benefits of VbE include:
School | Pupil | Society | |
Ac a dem i c | Improves academic diligence. | Empowers pupils to concentrate, work together andget the most from their learning. | Produces well-educated pupils. |
S o c i a l | High degree of relational trust between staff and pupils. | Good relationship with self and others, with the capacities to take the lid off their potential. | Well-adjusted contributing members of society. |
M o r a l | Positive school culture and ethos that empowers harmony, enabling each person to flourish. | Each pupil discovers their authentic self; is empowered by an understanding of a universal narrative based on positive human values. | Pupils have an altruistic, compassionate attitude to others and contribute to the sustainability of our world. |
The VbE method:
Each school setting understands the need to underpin all aspects of its culture, curriculum and life on a deep understanding of an ethical vocabulary, based on a community agreed set of positive human values, such as respect, love, tolerance, trust, justice and empathy. Such a vocabulary develops ethical intelligence and empowers pupils to live their lives using a new universal narrative that embraces all people. The school creates the VbE culture by introducing the seven principles of VbE simultaneously: Modelling; Inner curriculum; Reflection; Atmosphere; Curriculum; Leadership and Ethical vocabulary.
